Cavaliers Star James Harden Facing Weapon Charge Amid Arrest

Harden (6)

Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden is dealing with an unexpected off-court situation just weeks before a major contract decision.

Harden was arrested early Saturday morning in Houston and has been charged with misdemeanor unlawful carrying of a weapon, according to Harris County court records.

Authorities reportedly took Harden into custody at 3:41 a.m. after a handgun was allegedly observed on the seat of a vehicle registered to him. Court records state the firearm was in plain view and was not holstered.

The 36-year-old was booked shortly before 5:00 a.m. and later released after posting a $100 bond. His arraignment has been scheduled for June 22, according to the Harris County clerk’s office.

Shortly after news of the arrest surfaced, the Cavaliers released a statement addressing the situation.

“The Cleveland Cavaliers are aware of the arrest of James Harden this morning and are in the process of gathering additional information,” the organization said. “We are in contact with James and his representation and will continue to monitor developments as they become available. At this time, we will have no further comment.”

Representatives for Harden declined to comment.

The timing is notable given Harden’s contract situation heading into the offseason. The veteran guard holds a $42 million player option that must be addressed by June 29, although only $13.3 million of that figure is guaranteed.

League insiders have widely expected Harden to decline the option and negotiate a new multi-year agreement with Cleveland after helping lead the franchise to the Eastern Conference Finals following his February arrival.

Despite entering the later stages of his career, Harden remained a key contributor during the Cavaliers’ playoff run. He averaged 19.2 points and 5.5 assists per game throughout the postseason and played a major role in Cleveland’s deepest playoff push in years.

For now, the focus shifts away from free agency and back onto the legal process. With a court appearance scheduled later this month and the Cavaliers gathering additional information, more clarity on Harden’s situation could arrive before one of the most important offseason decisions of his career.
