Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to stack accolades, and his latest may be the most telling of all.
The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar has been named the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year, further cementing his reputation as the league’s most reliable closer in high-pressure moments.
Already the reigning MVP and Finals MVP, Gilgeous-Alexander now adds another major honor to what is shaping up as a historic run.
“This award means a lot,” Gilgeous-Alexander said on NBC Sports, which aired the award announcement. “To get this award, you have to help your team win games late, and what I’m about, more than anything, is winning games.”
His production backs it up. Gilgeous-Alexander led the league in clutch scoring with 175 points, guiding Oklahoma City to a 20-7 record in games that came down to the final moments. Whether it was creating his own shot or orchestrating the offense, he consistently delivered when the margin for error disappeared.
He topped a competitive field that included Jamal Murray and Anthony Edwards, both of whom also posted elite numbers in late-game situations. But it was SGA’s combination of scoring, control and efficiency that ultimately separated him.
“I’m proud I get to hoist it,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “It means I’m effective out there.”
The award, named in honor of Jerry West, long known as “Mr. Clutch”, recognizes players who thrive when games hang in the balance.
For Gilgeous-Alexander, it’s been a steady climb to this point, having previously finished among the top contenders in recent seasons before finally claiming the top spot.
And this may not be the last trophy he takes home.
With another MVP award potentially on the horizon and his place among the league’s elite already secured, Gilgeous-Alexander’s season is quickly becoming one of the most dominant in recent memory.
