The Golden State Warriors aren’t hiding from their reality, the window to maximise Stephen Curry is closing, and the front office is exploring every possible way to extend it. That search could lead to one of the most shocking moves in recent NBA history, LeBron James to the Warriors.
The idea of adding LeBron James this offseason “has some legs,” according to an NBA source.
It’s not the first time Golden State has explored a move of this magnitude. The franchise has consistently been aggressive in chasing star talent, previously discussing a potential deal for James before pivoting to acquire Jimmy Butler. More recently, the Warriors also made a push at Kawhi Leonard at the trade deadline, reinforcing their win-now mindset.
But James presents a completely different level of opportunity.
The NBA’s all-time leading scorer is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, and while his future remains uncertain, the possibility of pairing him with Curry has long been a topic of intrigue around the league.
James himself has previously addressed the idea, admitting he would “love to play” alongside Curry, even if, at the time, he suggested that opportunity might only come in a Team USA setting.
That could now change.
The Los Angeles Lakers remain a strong option for James, particularly with the team potentially reshaping its roster around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. However, questions around roster construction and long-term direction could open the door for rival teams.
For Golden State, the logic is simple.
With Curry still playing at an elite level but entering the later stages of his career, the organisation is under pressure to maximise every remaining season. Adding a player of James’ calibre would immediately shift the championship equation.
Nothing is guaranteed, and significant hurdles remain, from salary cap implications to James’ own decision-making process.
