The NBA is once again examining how teams approach the draft, with league officials openly discussing significant structural changes designed to curb tanking and protect competitive integrity.
The league recently began gathering feedback from owners and general managers during a board of governors meeting, where multiple draft and lottery concepts were presented, according to ESPN. The discussions come in the wake of new integrity concerns raised earlier this season following several high-profile gambling-related cases.
Those investigations led to newly introduced league policies aimed at limiting insider information leaks and deterring performance manipulation. Federal indictments involving Terry Rozier, Chauncey Billups, and former NBA player Damon Jones have only intensified scrutiny around how roster decisions and injury reporting can influence betting markets.
While the recent rule changes were primarily focused on gambling safeguards, league officials reportedly see tanking as closely related. In particular, late-season roster shutdowns and vague injury designations have long been viewed as indirect ways teams influence draft positioning.
One of the ideas presented would limit draft pick protections strictly to either the top four or the top 14 selections, effectively removing mid-lottery protections that can incentivize losing. Another proposal discussed would prevent teams from selecting in the top four in consecutive drafts, a move aimed at discouraging prolonged rebuilds through intentional losing.
The league also explored the concept of locking lottery odds after March first, ensuring that teams remain competitive down the stretch rather than pivoting toward draft positioning once playoff hopes fade.
League officials reportedly emphasized that the intention is not to penalize rebuilding teams giving young players opportunities, but rather to discourage organizations that deliberately weaken their lineups late in the season. As the NBA continues to refine its integrity policies, draft reform now appears firmly back on the table as the league searches for ways to keep meaningful basketball on the floor until the final buzzer of the regular season.
