Desmond Bane Hit With $35K Fine After Firing Ball at OG Anunoby

The NBA has handed Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bane a hefty bill after his latest outburst, fining him $35K for rifling the ball into OG Anunoby’s back during Sunday’s loss to the New York Knicks, according to league officials.

Midway through the fourth quarter at Madison Square Garden, Anunoby and Jalen Suggs crashed to the floor under the rim after a contested fast-break play.

Bane sprinted in behind them, scooped up the loose ball, and, rather than calmly checking possession, wound up and launched it directly at Anunoby’s back.

“It wasn’t just a little toss, either. Bane, who wasn’t falling out of bounds himself, wound up and fired the ball at Anunoby’s back hard before pointing at the officials as if the ball was out on Anunoby,” as NBC Sports described it.

Anunoby immediately sprung up and shoved Bane in the chest before players intervened. Officials assessed Bane a technical foul, and the game moved on. But the league office did not.

This marks the second time in two months Bane has been disciplined for the same type of incident. Back in early November, he was ejected against the Atlanta Hawks after he launched a ball toward Onyeka Okongwu’s head, a moment that resulted in both a flagrant and an ensuing technical.

Bane finished with 16 points in Sunday’s defeat, and the 27-year-old is averaging 28.3 points, 4.5 assists and 4.4 rebounds in his first season with Orlando. The Magic, now 14-10, were also hit with another blow as Franz Wagner exited early due to an ankle sprain that is expected to sideline him for multiple weeks.

New York continued its home dominance, improving to 13-1 at MSG behind Jalen Brunson’s 30 points and 9 assists. Anunoby added 21 points and 7 rebounds, while Josh Hart chipped in 17 points and 12 rebounds.
