The Dwyane Wade statue was unveiled this week and safe to say the reaction has been massive and now the great Charles Barkley has had his say.
Much like the rest of the internet, Barkley thinks the face on the statue is nasty and doesn’t at all depict the Heat legend D-Wade.
“It’s a great honor but they gotta take that thing down,” said to Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Inside the NBA on TNT. “If you made an ugly statue that’s what it would look like. That thing is awful.”
Barkley added, “That was after he saw the statue right there. That’s the face he made after [he saw it].”
The Suns legend couldn’t help but take a few more swings at the statue in between banter with his co-stars.
“Hey, Kenny, that statue was so bad they had to put all his stats behind it so you know who it was,” Chuck said.
Barkley added at the end, “The statue was so bad they had to put all his stats behind it so you know who it was.”
Smith then gave props to the sculptors who made the bronze statue, Omri Amrany and Oscar León of Rotblatt Amrany Studio.
The pair had to defend the work when the statue was revealed on Monday.
“I couldn’t do better than that,” Amrany said on any negative reaction to the artwork, via Will Manso. “I don’t think anybody else can do better than that. It is what it is, and we will love it forever.”
Manso also tweeted, “And they added Dwyane loved it. But you can’t tell people on-line that because it’s all negativity. I’ve talked to plenty of fans here today and they love it. Taking pics. Time will change opinion.”
D-Wade himself had to defend the statue multiple as well.
“I care, but I don’t,” Wade said. “The social media world is about opinions. Everyone has an opinion. Everyone, use y’all opinions. Please talk more about us. Talk more about a statue, come on down to see it, take some photos, send some memes. We don’t care.”
